During the time of winter solstice, the Sun becomes visible at noon at the lowest altitude over the horizon. So contrary to its chilling weather, the popular opinion about this season is that the winter is jam-packed with various entertaining events and festivals that are held every year. The winter is known as the holiday season because it has seen that most of the festivals and celebrations of different cultures and religions take place during this time every year. Here is a list of top winter festivals around the world.

  1.   Fur Rendezvous, Alaska—

Alaska’s oldest and largest winter festival Fur Rendezvous is famous all over the world for its amazing events. The festival includes more than 100 activities with 15 zany events such as running of the reindeer and races of the sled dogs that draw attention from all around the world. The festival goes on for 10 days and it is the traditional festival started more than 80 years ago. It offers a wide range of outdoor sports such as ice hockey, snowshoe softball, skiing, basketball, frostbite footrace and many more. It has been considered as the “largest winter festival of North America”. Generally, the festival holds in late February.

2.   Bon Soo Winter Carnival, Ontario—

 The annual winter festival of Canada is the Bon Soo Winter Carnival of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The carnival has been celebrating since 1964. Like other winter festival, it is also held in the month of February. The 10 days festival is considered as the second largest winter carnival of Canada. The special attractions of the carnival are bum slides and downhill canoe races. There is a special event as annual polar bear swimming, where around 200 chauvinists have to take dip into the ice cold water of Lake Superior.

        3.  Brits Winter Festival, Switzerland—

The Brits Winter Festival of Switzerland is famous to offer the entertainment with music and skiing bonanza for people of all ages and sizes. The festival provides some amazing packages where people can enjoy ski, party and sleep at the same time. People are able to enjoy the great live music of the best international music singers, musicians and DJs. All people are eligible to participate in the British Open Championships for the skiing and snowboarding.

4.. Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, New York—

New York’s Saranac Lake Winter Carnival is held every year from 31st January to 9th March. The main attraction of this winter festival is 115 years old elaborate ice palace which was built by the volunteers with ice blocks taken from Lake Flower. Several winter sports as offbeat contests, fireworks, concerts and parades are held during this festival.
