Angkor Wat temples are the most popular tourist destinations in Cambodia. Every year thousands of tourists gather round from all over the world to see the Angkor Wat temples. These temples are rich in their culture and history and have a mysterious appeal in them which tourists can not shake off.

History of the Angkor Wat temples

The Angkor Wat temples were built in the 12th century primarily with the orders of the king Suryavarman II. Most of the temples that were built during that time have been destroyed with time but the Angkor Wat temples are the only temples that stand upright till today. The temples were initially built in order to worship the Hindu God Vishnu. But the temples do not reflect only one religion. People of all religions visit the Angkor Wat temples to pray. The Angkor Wat temples have become a national symbol and that is why it appears even in the national flag of Cambodia.

The Angkor Wat temples were first built in order to symbolize the centre of the universe. In other words it is considered the centre of tourist attraction of Cambodia. Structure of the Angkor Wat temples

Just like the exterior of the Angkor Wat temples, the interior of the temples are also attractive. The temples are surrounded by a wall which is again surrounded by a moat. This structure gives the look of a medieval castle to the temples. Once you enter the temples you will find chapels, galleries and ponds. The most interesting structure of the temples is the throne of the King Suryavarman II. If he did not exist then the temples would not have been there. Though there are many items in the temples that remind of the famous king, the throne is the most eye catching item because it captures the essence of the leadership qualities of the king.
